Just Like Escher
Museum Escher in Het Paleis presents the winter exhibition ‘Just like Escher’, with works by no fewer than 36 artists from home and abroad. They show how topical and confrontational Escher’s themes still are and how his work lives on and evolves in contemporary culture.
Impossible objects, masterly metamorphoses and absurdist architecture come to life in this exhibition. Each work engages in a surprising encounter with Escher’s work. Sometimes Escher is literally chosen as a point of departure, sometimes a creator shares a fascination for certain themes that is then applied in a completely unique way. The similarities between Escher and contemporary artists can therefore be both conscious and unconscious, but the encounters always offer new perspectives.
Especially for this exhibition, Studio Lennarts & De Bruijn designed a graphic pattern that embraces Escher’s fascination with tessellations and takes the tiles in the Spanish Alhambra as a starting point. This wall-filling pattern interacts excitingly with the work of Sigrid Calon. Her colourful graphic risoprints have a grid at their base, just like Escher’s tessellations. The work of Sigrid Calon and Studio Lennarts & De Bruijn is linked by the search for the possibilities of lines, shapes and geometry within a distinct design. Hansje van Halem’s work is also represented: at the time of Net als Escher, visitors can have gift items wrapped with wrapping paper she designed.
