The exhibition ‘Nettie Mons & Floor Nijdeken & Saar Scheerlings’ for GLUE Amsterdam opens at the Van Eesteren Museum on Thursday 14 September. The exhibition features never-before-seen embroidery artworks by self-made artist Nettie Mons (1930 – 2017) and contemporary, new textile sculptures by artist Saar Scheerlings. And you can get started yourself at Crossover Collective, the embroidery table created by designer Floor Nijdeken.
Nettie Mons – Cross-stitch queen
The exhibition Nettie Mons: Cross-stitch queen presents a large number of embroideries by Nettie Mons (1930 – 2017). Mons was born in Amsterdam, obtained her craft diploma in 1950 and her teaching qualification two years later. She then went to work as a teacher. After she married Jan Steven Cloeck van Dijk in 1960, Mons was fired with honours, something that was common for the time. After all, a married woman could not work. Mons barely processed this dismissal. She thought it was unfair and remained angry all her life. When the children left home, Mons looked for a new meaningful occupation: “After some searching and fiddling I came to the manufacture of embroideries. (…) A painting is made with paint and brush and a mass of strokes, an embroidery with needle and thread and a mass of stitches.” Mons saw her embroidery practice as full-blown work. For each embroidery, she kept accurate records of the number of hours worked, enabling her to calculate a price for each work. The exhibition was curated by Dorota Dabrowska.
Floor Nijdeken – Crossover Collective
Crossover Collective is a two-person embroidery table designed by Dutch designer Floor Nijdeken. Especially for Glue Amsterdam, the Van Eesteren Museum will display three of his embroidery installations. With his installations, Nijdeken wants to invite visitors to talk to each other while embroidering. Together, they create one big embroidery. Saar Scheerlings
Saar Scheerlings (Eindhoven, 1990) is a designer and artist who designs and produces textile works in particular. She experiments with new ways of making inspired by textile crafts and uses materials she finds locally, such as antique French linen or leftover silk paint from a neighbour. Her process is reminiscent of jazz music, fusion cooking or life in old port cities where people enjoy exchanging and transforming. From this arises a body of work that gives a grip on the chaotic world of randomness, meaninglessness and a multitude of materials, shapes and colours. With her works, she creates her own ‘cosmos’ in which chance is embraced and appropriated, evoking a suggestion of meaning and devotion. At the Van Eesteren Museum, she is showing three new works: painted silk talismans 50 cm high.
Van Eesteren Museum
The Van Eesteren Museum is a community museum in the neighborhood Nieuw-West, the largest and most culturally diverse borough of Amsterdam. The borough was set-up as the ultimate CIAM neighborhood. Its design is largely credited to the influential urban planner Cornelis van Eesteren. The museum encompasses an indoor museum with a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions on a variety of topics like architecture, design and social history, an outdoor museum and a museum house from the 50s.
GLUE Amsterdam
GLUE Amsterdam – connected by design – is a four days design-route for Amsterdam designers, the general public, architects, brands, labels, showrooms, galleries, academies and other colleagues. It takes place from Thursday 14 until Sunday 17 September 2023.
