Peter te Bos

Graphic Design heritage

From 1984 on, Peter te Bos lets his two careers, as a designer and as a musician/vocalist, develop side by side. The musician in him provides him with a new vision of the design process; the freedom he as a musician experiences now enters his graphic designs. He strongly believes that the element of surprise is important. He embraces ‘nothingness’ as the starting point for an extended process of sketching and drawing. He prefers to begin working without any direction, mindful of Peter Straub’s maxim: “It is not exciting to know where you’re going.” Piles and piles of drawings show how extensive his search is of the best junction of form and content. His sketches are old-fashioned: handmade. Digitizing comes only at the end of the process. Te Bos cherishes his own characteristic handwriting: it has become his trademark.

Dutch Graphic Roots is a series of online publications and aims at generating attention to the roots of Dutch graphic design culture.
