Private house Schijf

By 15-04-2019

Nominated for BNA Best building of the year 2019
Category Private Living Experience

After splitting a plot in the rural area of Schijf, the space arose to build a house on a conventional building surface. By placing the house all the way back on the building surface and making use of the rules for permit-free construction, it turned out to be possible to position the house in the landscape in an uncompromising way.

The house responds to the context in its own unique way because of the position of the building in the middle of the plot. From every position in the house there is a view of the surroundings and the landscape is drawn in through the large glass surfaces. Despite its rigorous position, the house gets something exhibitionistic, but the distance to the public road and the position of the windows and closed parts provide the right balance between openness and privacy. The opening right through the house separates main program and outbuilding, but both are used intensively by the residents. On a rainy day, the children play in the outbuilding or the client uses it to organize workshops with clients. From the kitchen the house offers the most beautiful perspective on both the front garden and the back garden.
