Rethinking Plastic: design with a mission
ONE WEEK ABOUT Rethinking Plastic by curator Leonne Cuppen
One designer thinks of a way to collect plastic waste from rivers, lakes and harbours and process it into usable products. The other turns plastic waste into a surprising object as a statement to create awareness. And a third develops a plate of corn waste as an alternative to polystyrene. At the exhibition ‘Rethinking Plastic: design with a mission’, twenty five designers show how we can look at this maligned material differently or how we can deal with it in a different way. Due to the success during Dutch Design Week, this exhibition is being extended. On display at Yksi Expo in the Black Box until 5 January.
Recycled Island Foundation in Rotterdam developed a kind of trap to collect the plastic waste in rivers, lakes and ports. The material is recycled into elements for a floating park or processed into a sofa with a 3D printer. Shahar Livne dug up waste plastic on the beach in the Netherlands and Israel and melted it into a kind of new rock form that she calls lithoplast. In the very distant future, if we no longer produce plastic, we can recollect this from the soil as a valuable raw material. A poetic project that makes you think. Or take the French-Mexican designer Anne Sophie Flores Saleun. She developed a plate based on corn waste as an alternative to polystyrene that is often used, for example, in barbecues and takeaway meals and hamburgers.
“Rethinking plastics: design with a mission” emerged from a project at Yksi Expo during the World Ocean Day in June, in collaboration with Searious Business and the Dutch Design Foundation. During Dutch Design Week, the exhibition received many positive reactions from visitors and media attention. The participating designers show that it is possible with creativity and courage to reconsider and rebuild our relationship with plastic. To ultimately leave a cleaner planet for future generations. The rethinking-plastic.com website displays an extensive gallery of projects and products.
