Visual Book Biennial Edition #01: Thé Tjong-Khing

By 21-09-2017

This fall Cultural institution SCHUNCK * presents with the first Beeldend Boek Biënnale (Visual Book Biennial) a new tradition: a biennial manifestation aimed at young and old, with the mutually reinforcing combination of word and image functioning as the guiding principle.

The first edition of the Beeldend Boek Biënnale is dedicated to one of the most important illustrators of the Netherlands: Thé Tjong-Khing (1933). His beautiful, adventurous, enchanting, and sometimes creepy drawings tickle the imagination of young and old. They are packed with unexpected details, spot-on lines, emotions, movement, and often also jokes. The exhibition shows original drawings on the themes of Animals, Art and Music, Strip books, Tales and – in line with the theme of the Kinderboekenweek (Children’s Book Week) – Getting the creeps.

Thé’s work is very diverse, ranging from the sleek black and white comics Arman & Ilva dating from the early years of his career to the detailed picture puzzles in the more recent Waar is de taart?(Where is the cake?). Thé also made the well-known drawings for Vos en Haas (Fox and Hare). It was precisely because he was a strip cartoonist that the recently deceased Miep Diekmann asked him to illustrate her book Total loss, weet je wel (Total loss, you know). Since then he has illustrated many children’s books by Guus Kuijer, Els Pelgrom, Sylvia Vanden Heede, Dolf Verroen and other writers.
