Exhibition ‘The Rhythm Painter’

By 22-04-2016

Over the past fifty years, Jaap Drupsteen has made his mark with music, video, and videographic productions. He is now being honored with two exhibitions dedicated to his work. Today in part 2: Rijksmuseum Twenthe presents his most recent work: ‘The Rhythm Painter’.

The guiding principle in Jaap Drupsteen’s oeuvre is the symbiosis between music and image. From around 2000, he makes his own productions with simultaneously composed animations and rhythms. For almost forty years, he has been looking for the perfect interplay between image and sound. “The Rhythm Painter” – never shown before – is the provisional end result of this search.

Imagine a space of over four hundred square meters containing twelve colossal abstract images projected on walls – lightly hypnotic abstractions continuing to evolve. The images are pulsing along to the rhythm of seven different streams of music that are synchronized to one pace.
