Brain_manufacturing

By 17-03-2016

Brain_manufacturing is a study about design based on brain activity. In any design process, the designer makes choices, such as which colors to use, which materials and shapes. If you let a group of non-designers make these decisions, will you get the perfect design?

Merel Bekking collaborated with the Spinoza Centre for Neuroimaging Amsterdam and scientist Steven Scholte. With an MRI scanner, they could look in the brain of 20 subjects. Merel discovered what these people like it by looking to what their brains positively respond to when looking at everyday user products, regardless of what they claim they like.

By looking at their preferences for colors, shapes and materials, Merel tried to find the formula for the perfect design. The study showed that there is a strong preference from the brain for the color red, the material plastic and sealed organic shapes.
