Het Nieuwe Instituut organizes a series of exhibitions about materials and their economic, cultural and social significance. The first one of the series, the exhibition about wood, was on display earlier this year.
Each time, the focus is on one specific material – such as plastic or porcelain. The guiding principle is the complex relationship between innovation and conflict. The exhibition is part of the multiannual program De Dingen en De Materialen.
The exhibition ‘HOUT’ showed how the countless products produced by the forest bear the tracks of all, often conflicting, meanings of the landscape. HOUT presented work by various designers in a context of historical, cultural and social references.
