Documentary Mart Visser

By 08-11-2023

On November 6, the documentary ‘Mart Visser’ premiered at DeLaMar in Amsterdam. Where everyone when thinking of the name Mart Visser immediately thinks of beautiful exclusive evening dresses, high-end fashion, large couture shows with a platoon of models, this documentary shows a broader and complete picture of the designer.

Director – and good friend – Marius Looijmans made his first documentary about the life and career of couturier, designer and artist Mart Visser. He was given the freedom and opportunity to film everything and make his story as a documentary filmmaker. To show the viewer what it’s like when you have the eternal urge to create. A true passion, with craft and love, but also frustration. And of course Mart Visser his great successes, business conflicts and the setbacks in his life.

The result is – a more than hour-long – glimpse into Mart Visser’s life, full of creation, fashion and art. With 58 couture shows, dozens of ready-to-wear collections and collaborations with major companies, the range of images was enormous. A true “kill your darlings” to select the right photos, films and videos.

The documentary contains a very enjoyable time picture: from Mart’s strong emergence and positioning in the early 1990s among the settled guard couturiers in the Netherlands; Frank Govers, Edgar Vos and Frans Molenaar to today. The love and passion to beautify a woman and put her on a pedestal, applied as a concept within all his fashion creations. And, how his career very organically takes a new turn….

‘Welcome to my world,’ as Mart often says himself, is entirely appropriate here.
