Copper Monday print 2024 – Object denken

By 26-01-2024

Since the 15th century, Copper Monday (Koppermaandag) has been a festive day for printers. On the first Monday after Epiphany, apprentice printers presented a proof of competence to master printers. Later, Copper Monday prints (koppermaandagprenten) were given to clients. With the rise of Christmas and New Year cards, the ritual was lost during the 20th century.

Since 2023, Graphic Matters and NPN Drukkers have been keeping this age-old tradition alive. Graphic Matters believes in the power of print and its importance at a time of ever-increasing digitalisation of the graphic design profession. The organisation gives talented designers the freedom to experiment with printing techniques and paper types. This year, they invited the Dutch illustration duo Rob and Robin to design a unique printed product. Their investigative approach, where they do not shy away from experimentation, ensures that these young masters remain constantly innovative and original.

Rob and Robin created four unique illustrations for Koppermaandag 2024. The series originates from an investigation into assigning rope-like properties to solid shapes. Using 3D software, the duo plays with gravity and the physical reaction of objects in relation to each other. The resulting absurdist illustrations are situations that capture everyone’s imagination.

Whereas Rob and Robin’s recognisable illustrations are usually applied digitally, it was a challenge to translate the bright colours and deep black lines from screen to print. NPN Drukkers’ expertise combined with tactile papers and printing with LED-UV resulted in an extraordinary production. This print work celebrates not only the revaluation of print, but also the artistic research with which designers continually reinvigorate their practice.
