Optic Deception & Mediated Reality

By 06-10-2017

‘In my work I research the reliability of images. The reality that we perceive with our eyes and brain is just a representation of the outside world. I often set my own perception against the perception of media such as photography and film. Just like the senses, these media translate external stimuli into images. How do these media represent the outside world and what are the differences between these images and the perceived images in the brain? I think that the moment something is being represented, both in photos and in our perception, information is lost.’

‘Commissioned by the EYE Film Institute, I built for my graduation a machine that questions the reliability of analog film. This machine develops a film, which is then copied on a new piece of film by means of exposure. After developing and copying the original negative film, a positive copy appears. A feedback loop arises and eventually the image becomes abstract and unrecognizable.’
