Dutch Alphabets

By 10-05-2016

Dutch Alphabets, compiled by Mathieu Lommen and Peter Verheul, is a new lettering model book containing 46 plates featuring samples by some of today’s prominent ‘Dutch’ lettering artists, type designers, calligraphers and sign painters.

For the printing they could choose two or three from the selected six PMS colours and black. The broadsides are collected in a handmade portfolio and published in a limited edition by De Buitenkant Publishers.

The Netherlands have a rich tradition of producing printed manuals for the teaching of handwriting and lettering. The engraved writing books of the Golden Age were influential throughout Europe. In the 1830s printed lettering model books began to be published in great numbers internationally.

The invention of lithography made it technically easier to produce illustrated editions, and also created its own market. These publications were aimed at both professional and trainee lithographers, signwriters, commercial artists and window dressers.
