Christa van der Meer

By 18-02-2016

Working from a temporary studio in the heart of Cape Town, South Africa, Christa van der Meer was confronted by the reality of what she had imagined to be an exotic paradise. After experiencing violence, poverty and betrayal up close in such idyllic surroundings, she began to wonder – what is the beauty of this situation? And what is its ugliness? Can one exist without the other?

With a series of paintings, collages and fashion sculptures, Van der Meer captures these two clashing but dependent opposites. Not only do they enable her to create the atmosphere she endeavours visually, but the also enable her to investigate specific silhouettes, colours, prints and proportions. This selection of collages preview a forthcoming fashion collection that will be presented during Paris Fashion Week in January.
