Places of memory

By 31-10-2014

Wijnanda Deroo has made a name internationally with her intriguing photos of interiors. Het Noordbrabants Museum commissioned Deroo to make a new series of interior portraits in co-operation with guest curator Frans Bevers. Twenty-five mysterious spaces in the Netherlands are displayed as large-format photos in the exhibition ‘Places of memory’.

An old farmhouse is set up as a studio, a school as living/work space, a water tower as café and junk shop. These are spaces in the Netherlands that have acquired a new function. The users of the space have set up house and made it their own, but the old purpose still shines through. Deroo shows what the users do with the space without including them in the picture.

Wijnanda Deroo (Zeist 1955) lives in New York and has recorded many and diverse places around the world with her camera. Her photos seem to examine the soul or essence of a space. Or, as the New York Times wrote, “Deroo’s photos have a inquisitive nosy quality”.

There is also a book ‘Places of memory’, designed by Joost Grootens, published by Lecturis.
