Joost van Bleiswijk in De Bushalte van Rietveld

By 09-05-2024

Joost van Bleiswijk started the now leading design studio Kiki & Joost in Eindhoven together with Kiki van Eijk after graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2001.

Joost is the twentieth exhibitor invited to design an installation for this year’s Bushalte van Rietveld. The installation they have specially created for it is an homage to Gerrit Rietveld, the architect of the 1963 bus shelter.

In the explanation of their design, Kiki and Joost indicate that every designer is in fact indebted to this godfather of Dutch design. This close involvement is, in their experience, stimulating and inspiring on the one hand, but in addition, it is also a creative ‘burden’ from which the designer has to free himself and find his own way.

This ambiguous design attitude prompted Joost van Bleiswijk to transform the Bushalte column into a ‘torch’. A composition that is initially in harmony with Rietveld’s formal language, but upwards seeks more and more contrast and then sparks out of the light column into the open air in a dynamic of its own.
