Driving Dutch Design – Charis Stephanie

By 24-08-2023

ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curators Patrick Aarts Sen (BNO) and Katja Lucas (DDF)

Driving Dutch Design is the professionalisation and networking programme of Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers (BNO), Dutch Design Foundation (DDF) and Stichting Stokroos that helps talented designers get started in the world of entrepreneurship. Over the next few days, we show the Drivers of 2023, Charis Stephanie is one of them.

Charis Stephanie is an Amsterdam-based creative studio specializing in illustration and design with a background in product design and film science. This combination creates a refreshing interplay between magic and design.

For Charis Stephanie, illustration is a method of bringing fantasy to life and combining it with reality. This allows her to easily translate the wildest ideas into illustrated images.

Her style looks traditional, but is far from it. With the many contrasts, graphic elements, cinematic perspectives, amount of details and use of color, her work gets an alienating impression.

Her inspirations come from the world of film, art and animation. But her biggest inspiration is still women. Charis Stephanie therefore illustrates many women and is someone who stands up for equality and equal treatment. She denounces topics such as femicide. The graphic novel “The Red Shoes” on this subject is in the works. She also founded an International Women’s Day Market in Amsterdam this year.

”Thanks in part to Driving Dutch Design, I see better where my qualities lie and have dared to take the step of organizing a Women & Design event during Dutch Design Week 2023.”
